The world is a crazy place. And you and I are bombarded by information all the time.

Too many of us get caught up in the happenings of the world around us, which then causes us to neglect ourselves.

We are concerned for people we don’t know and awful things happening to them. But then, we’re also concerned about coworkers, friends, family, and loved ones. Only after that do we give any attention to ourselves and our needs and desires.

The irony of this is that when you are good to yourself, you are more capable of being good to others.

Because of the many mixed messages of our world, it is all too easy to misunderstand the line between selfishness and self-care. Doing for ourselves, we are told, is selfish — because we should be putting others first. Which is fine — until it’s to the exclusion of ourselves.

However, what we neglect is that we need to care for ourselves before we can care for anyone else.

We tend to ignore self-care. We do not do enough things to treat our minds, bodies, and spirits to the best we deserve. Then we allow ourselves to get out-of-shape — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
