Everything I have considered writing today feels trite.
The level of insanity I am seeing on the news happening in the world right now is distressing, painful, and seriously upsetting.
Yet it comes as no surprise when you look at history and how we got here.
Systemic racism in the United States got bolstered with the election of a racist President. Overt or otherwise, Trump has never been an ally to anyone but himself and what aggrandizes him.
But that’s just one aspect of the problem. When we shifted away from a meritocratic leadership idea, we wound up with elected officials who were not just unqualified, but dangerously so. Their lack of understanding of law, order, human rights, and decency is a slap in the face to every ideal that the US was built on.
Times were tough before the pandemic. Then we witnessed multiple senseless killings of unarmed black people — and a free pass for armed white people happening almost simultaneously. Armed white protestors walk with heads held high while unarmed black protestors are tear-gassed, beaten, tased, shot with rubber bullets, and treated like animals.
I feel helpless in this situation because I can’t join protests currently, can’t know first-hand what it’s like to be a black person or other non-white, and recognize my place of privilege. Hence, why nothing I can write on this topic doesn’t feel trite.
Still, I am going to do my best to offer support however I can.
I am an ally of the oppressed
Let me make this clear. If you are black, LGBTQ, gender-neutral, female, immigrant, or any other “minority” or “underrepresented” group — I stand with you. I will speak out against fascism, racism, sexism, bigotry, and hate. If I come across someone causing another harm I will intervene.
Like most allies, I am imperfect. I am well aware that my “kind” — middle class white cis-gendered middle-aged male — are a large part of the overall problem. Because I am not of a minority group, I do not know how it feels to be a victim of the system.
Still, as an imperfect ally, I stand with you. Black Lives Matter. The systemic racism and unchecked police brutality need to end.
Stay-at-home orders are NOT tyranny. They are the best way to combat a virus that doesn’t have feelings or emotions — but will infect ANYONE that it comes in contact with. This is not some sort of made-up conspiracy to removed Republicans from office — and if you believe that you can fuck-off right about now (I have lost 2 people to COVID-19 from my life so far.)
I stand with those who are oppressed. Also, I stand with essential workers, and all they are doing to keep people alive and keep things moving in whatever way they work.
When possible, I will march by your side. If needs be, I will offer my space as a shelter for you.
I am your ally, and I will be open about that — imperfect though I may be.
The best thing I can do now is offer my support, stand beside the oppressed, and vote in coming elections to do my part to change the narrative.
I stand with the oppressed, stand against fascism, and support ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for ALL.
