All my life I have lived somewhere with largely well-defined seasons. Sun, heat, and warmth day and night in summer. Crisp evenings and gorgeous foliage in autumn. Colder weather and snow in winter. Fresh green, budding trees and plants, increasing warmth of spring.

Over the years, however, I’ve become less and less fond of wintertime. The chilly air, grey and sunless days, snow, and everything that comes with it hold less and less appeal.

In my teens, I would ski in the winter and enjoyed the snow. But I’ve moved ever-so-slightly more south in the United States. But we still get a defined winter (albeit with infrequent snow and fewer why-does-the-air-hurt-my-face? days).

I don’t miss the super-cold, utterly snowy winters of my youth in Minnesota. And though there is a temptation to move even further away from the snow-belt, I feel like this is the part of the country where I belong, and these milder winters are largely tolerable.

However, so long as I stay where winter will bring snow, cold, and days of grey skies — I will have to contend with the winter blahs.

What are the winter…
