How Do We Define Normal for our Health, Wellness, and Wellbeing?
What’s normal now can cease to be normal tomorrow.
Normal is a much more subjective notion than we credit it as being.
Much of what gets labeled normal is only applicable to a select few people. And even then, there is a huge range of variables.
This shouldn’t be a surprise — yet it tends to be. We strive to be normal, reach normalcy, and gauge our balance from there. Which is, frankly, ridiculous.
Why? Allow me to quote Albert Einstein here,
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”
What that means is reality is — for every one of us — is perceived uniquely. This means, when you get down to it, there are nearly 8 billion unique versions of reality.
Where in the hell do we define normal in that case?
Frequently, we just ignore this fact. A determination has been made along the way that x, y, and z are normal.
Except they are seldom set in stone, and often change due to better knowledge, experience, or some other factor.
Striving for normal beyond what is right for us individually is maddening. Let’s explore how…
