For every ill in the world today — you can find someone to blame. It’s very easy to do.

Everyone does it, too. Sometimes with intent, sometimes malice of forethought, and sometimes just because it feels super easy to do.

Most politicians blame their opposition for all our woes. Business leaders blame laws and regulations for poor wages and lousy treatment of employees. Religious leaders blame other religions and atheists for everything wrong in our world today.

What’s more, in the process of self-improvement — whether independent or via therapy — no matter if it’s mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual, blame is an easy go-to. Blame your mental illness for your inability to relate to people, blame your parents for your trust issues, blame McDonald’s for making you fat, and so on.

The problem is that blame disempowers us. Why? Because how can you fix something you take zero responsibility or zero accountability for? Blame throws responsibility and accountability to the wayside.

Even if there are extenuating, outside circumstances that have been part of the cause of the problem, you still have some accountability. Why? Because you chose to a greater or…
