How is There No Universal State of Being “Normal” for Everyone?

Recognizing that there is no universal state of being “normal” would be beneficial to us all.

I believe that “normal” is one of the most dangerous concepts in all human society.

Why? Because there is no universal state of being for everyone.

Thus, there is no normal.

And yet, we are constantly bombarded by these notions and ideas of what “normal” is and should be. When you are not “normal” that makes you suspect, causes disharmony, and can have many other negative impacts.

Besides — what’s so great about “normal” anyhow?

To add insult to injury — how normal gets defined is wildly variable.

For example — I live in the northeastern United States, just outside Philadelphia, PA. The area I live in is fairly progressive, so normal includes every racial variation you can imagine, a wide mix of religions, and heterosexual and homosexual families living next door to one another. All of this, to me, is “normal.”

Not so far from here, maybe less than an hour away, there are communities that are all white, all Christian, and all heterosexual. To them, my “normal” is not normal at all.
