Is Finding and/or Creating Balance Just a Physical Matter?

Balance is necessary for all elements of our overall health and wellbeing.

One of the best benefits I have received from 30 years of fencing is an outstanding sense of balance.

Because footwork in fencing is different from walking or other such movement — combined with bladework — balance is everything. Maintaining it can be the difference between controlling and not controlling any given fight.

Most people — when considering balance — think of it in these terms. Physical balance is walking tightropes, standing on one leg, and so on. But balance moves way beyond this.

Balance is necessary for every element of our overall health, wellbeing, and wellness.

Recognizing and acknowledging the four elements

I assert that our overall health, wellness, and wellbeing break down into four elements.

· Physical health

· Mental health

· Emotional health

· Spiritual health

While mental, emotional, and spiritual health often gets lumped together into mental health — I feel the separation adds some clarity. Mental health is broad…
