Joe Biden was by no stretch of the imagination the candidate I would have chosen to run for President. He’s got a lot of baggage and issues. While he has some appeal to a broad base, it is not because he lights them on fire or excites them — it’s because he’s as mediocre as they come.
But Joe Biden, for all his flaws, imperfections, and lack of inspiring excitement, is a decent human being.
Today, that counts for a LOT.
Donald Trump is not a decent human being. He’s not a good person. He is a consistent liar, a narcissist, an obstructionist, racist, misogynist, and all-around terrible person. If Trump cares for anyone, it’s himself and that which can better him and his.
A key missing component of Donald Trump is empathy. He has none whatsoever.
Trump has never shown one iota of remorse, sympathy, or any other empathetic reaction to anything. Thousands dying needlessly from COVID-19 because he ignored the reports? Whatever, the economy and the almighty dollar matter more than lives. White supremacist armed protestors marching openly? There are fine people on both sides.
Hell, when the President should be working to unite people in the face of protests against systemic racism — Trump goes out of his way to further the divide.
Joe Biden does not lack empathy. How do I know this? This letter, published to Medium by Joe Biden, expressing his sorrow and sympathy at the passing of Annie Glenn, wife of astronaut and Senator John Glenn.
Has Trump EVER done anything like this for anyone lost for any reason? Not that I recall.
The choice is much simpler than it tends to appear
I am not about to join a Joe Biden fan club. But I just want to point out that unlike our current leadership, Biden has empathy and compassion.
We need both now more than ever.
Before you talk about how this coming election will be choosing between the lesser of two evils, consider this: the choice is between empathy and indifference burgeoning on disdain
- or –
You can see the choice as being between compassion and cruelty.
I don’t know about you, but I have had more than enough disdain and cruelty from the leaders of this government. Because yes, this choice does extend to those running for Congress, too.
Unlike Trump — who’s an arrogant, narcissistic bumbler — Mitch McConnell is a cold, calculating, horrible, intentionally selfish, and cruel monster.
He’s not alone, either. How many Republicans continue to support Trump even after he ignores the constitution, calls for the US Military to act AGAINST the American people, forcibly disrupts peaceful protests for a bullshit photo op, and continues to subvert the system?
Empathy and compassion matter so, so much. They are fundamental parts of good human beings. They are NOT a sign of weakness — they are, in fact, strength.
Joe Biden is not a perfect choice. But he is a far, far better choice than Trump because he HAS empathy and compassion. Look at all that is happening out there today and you will see why this matters so very much.
