Life is Seldom Either/Or

There are almost always more choices than just either/or.

One of the best things about life can also be one of the worst. There are an almost infinite number of options available in nearly any given situation.

When I was a kid, I had lots of Star Wars toys. While I could reenact the scenes of the movies with all the vehicles, playsets, and figures I had — instead, I tended to create new scenes. In my head, there was an entire canon that occurred between the movies (the original trilogy) and after them, too.

This illustrates how it wasn’t an either/or thing I chose. I could easily have reenacted the movies AND added to my headcanon. At a young age, this was how I perceived life.

As we grow and leave childhood behind, we have a mania for complicating things. Funny thing is, this often occurs in an attempt to simplify them. Dichotomies are created in the interest of simplifying the process. But in truth, they create artificial lack, scarcity, and insufficiency.

The sooner you begin that process in life the more the notions embed in your subconscious — and the more you accept these artifices.

For example, once you graduate high school, you’re frequently given an either/or choice. Either you go to college or you get a job. If you choose to…
