Nobody Else Can Do “It” For You

No matter what the “it” is — nobody else can act for you but you.

American society loves to blame.

You name it, we blame it. From the very top to the bottom, blame is thrown out there like confetti.

Emotional and mental distress? Blame your parents. Financial distress? Blame the economy. Job issues? Blame the government. Dissatisfied with this, that, or the other thing? Blame those guys (immigrants, rich people, poor people, anti-vaxxers, and so on).

When we spend so much energy on blame, we move farther and farther away from taking responsibility and accountability. Eventually, nothing at all is your doing, your fault, your miscalculation, your poor choice, or whatever.

Why blame? Because it disassociates and feels, in the short-term, like the “it” in question is easier to deal with. Not my circus, not my monkeys. Someone else will handle it.

When it comes to the big picture matters around us — this is at least partially true. I can do nothing directly about Afghanistan, American politics, or getting people to take unselfish precautions to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19.

Okay, maybe not nothing — but nothing direct. I can vote in elections, call and write politicians, attend protests, and…
