Let’s be blunt, shall we? The world before COVID-19 was fucked up in several ways.
The disproportionate dispersal of wealth has been laid out like never before. Big corporations that tend to make billion-dollar profits are struggling while their workforce struggles even more — but their bailout is a bit bigger than yours and mine. The stark lack of leadership on the part of the American political system, thanks to the ludicrous Trump administration, has killed thousands. The economy is frozen, and when things will get back to normal is a total mystery.
Normal, as we have known it, isn’t working. Plain and simple, it’s a mess. The coronavirus forced us to slow way-the-hell down, and shelter-in-place at home, causing pollution to drop noticeably, the overall seismic activity of the earth to lessen, and maybe allow us to get a new perspective on certain “truths” we have come to believe.
For all the parents who have to juggle their jobs AND their children’s education — maybe you will have more respect for teachers? As the lies of our political leaders and business leaders become more apparent, do you see how the system favors a very select few? Maybe those low-wage people who are STILL WORKING during this time should be paid a living wage after all? And perhaps you can see how medical access should be easier and not so able to bankrupt people?
Where we came from was known, yes. But maybe this is the time to change from it intentionally.
We have an opportunity here
It is still a total mystery as to when we will be able to return to any form of what we consider normal. When will social distancing become unnecessary? How long until businesses reopen? When will the uncertainty, fear, and other craziness subside?
There is no answer. And despite attempts on the part of politicians to create one, they are out of their league. Until the CDC and WHO provide some expert information, we remain in limbo. That’s the best way to keep this thing from being worse.
I know someone who died because of COVID-19. Without a doubt, you know someone, too. The current social distancing is the best way to keep us from knowing a lot more dead someones because of this.
How the world was before we took these measures was imperfect. How many people were told their job could not be done remotely who are now working remotely? How much did we take for granted time spent with friends, family, and loved ones we don’t live with? Do you see how many of the things you were told about the way the world works are not true after all?
On the other side of this insanity, we have the power to choose to change to a new normal. Given that we will not be able to go back to exactly how it was before, it is in our best interest to recognize and work with this.
What does that amount to?
You have a lot more power than you probably realize.
They — and I mean the nameless faceless they that dictate how the collective consciousness should be, are not as powerful as they’d like. You and I are each a lot more powerful than them when we recognize our own empowerment.
Another positive that could result from this situation is that all the time at home many people are spending opens them up to some self-reflection. If, for example, you are having a really difficult time social distancing, what lessons are you learning from that? What has this situation shown you about yourself and the people in your life?
I know some people have this harder than others in many ways. But that doesn’t lessen anyone’s ability to gain from this experience things that can better their lives. Returning to normal — when normal was so utterly flawed — makes no sense.
Instead, let’s create a new normal.
Stand up for yourself and others
One of the saddest things the coronavirus has shown us is just how many people lack empathy and human kindness. For all of us who recognize those still working, and respect those doing the best that they can, there are many assholes who only care about themselves.
They care only about their money, that which impacts their life, and don’t give a shit about whether you live or die in this situation. Their image or power or what-have-you is of greater importance.
YOU MATTER. YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO THE WORLD. Do not believe that you are unimportant or that your life doesn’t matter. Because it does.
Sure, sometimes it won’t feel that way — even if there are no outside influences. But it’s the truth. You are important and you matter.
Actions taken to disempower people are intended to maintain lies. The selfishness, greed, lack of kindness and empathy are intentionally hurtful actions to keep you down.
This is an unfortunate state of affairs. The “they” who do this have missed (and continue to miss) a golden opportunity to improve not only themselves and their interests, but you and yours.
You tend to get better when you give better. Like attracts like, so when you give crap and garbage it should come as no surprise when that’s what you receive, too.
You are empowered to do better than that. You are a person of infinite kindness and empathy and those attributes can take you far.
Believe in yourself. Believe in your capabilities, power, strength, and possibility. Stand up for yourself and be a beacon to stand up for others, too.
How to create a new normal
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Frankly, there NEVER is. But the following will help.
· Maintain social distancing until medical professionals say otherwise. Do not let the inexpert money-grubbing “leaders” contradict the expert advice of the doctors, scientists, and specialists who know best.
· Be kind. Focus less on the assholes like Trump and his cronies and more on the good people like Dr. Fauci and Governors Cuomo and Newsom and the people striving to help us and not themselves.
· Practice self-care. Do at least one thing every day that makes you feel good. That’s not selfish in any way and allows you to maintain your strength.
· Focus on positive outcomes, not negative ones. You can’t avoid the negativity out there. The doom and gloom about the economy and overall future of society are prevalent and invasive as hell. But you have a choice as to whether that will be your focus — or instead, you look for positives. Don’t deny the negatives because you can’t — but don’t give it all your focus, either.
· Educate yourself. Seriously, the current political landscape of the USA is based largely on a lack of education. It’s not because people are stupid, mind you — it’s because they would rather believe an idea with no basis in reality than actual education. Promote education, learn more, and you may find there are some truths you’ve swallowed along the way that it may be time to throw-up and replace.
Whatever you do, be open to a new reality. A better reality. Because returning to the untenable status quo pre-COVID-19 means we set ourselves up to repeat this again when the next pandemic hits (or whatever other disaster of this nature occurs).
Maybe I am too optimistic
I acknowledge that. It’s entirely possible my optimism about a better reality and new normal is misplaced. Perhaps even misguided.
But let me ask you this — do you WANT to live in the doom and gloom? Would you like the world to remain completely fucked up and senseless? Do you want to see how much more the uncaring billionaires and their corporate greed can wreck the planet?
Unless you are an utterly heartless, unkind, unempathetic person I am going to presume your answer is NO.
Consider why a new normal might be beneficial to you. See how a better reality means YOUR life would be better. Why not have that for the whole damned world, too?
I would rather spread my optimistic perspective of the possibility and potential for this terrible situation to lead somewhere good. Returning to “normal” may be a bad Idea — and while that might be a bit extreme, there are many reasons to consider this present moment an opportunity rather than a circumstance.
Change is inevitable. So why not work with it to make it better?
I don’t know about you, but I would rather see a new normal of more kindness, empathy, and goodwill between people and the planet on the other side of this.
Is there any legit reason anybody can give me not to strive for that?
You are worthy and deserving of using your mindfulness to find and/or create the reality in which you desire to live. When all is said and done you and I matter, as does how we approach, find, and/or create a new (and preferably better) normal after COVID-19.
