Sanity is Overrated
Like beauty and perfection, I believe sanity is in the eye of the beholder.
This morning I went for my usual walk.
As I started my walk, I felt it beginning to sprinkle. I was close to home, still. Thus, I could head back in before it earnestly got going.
At that point, I decided to go my usual route. Then, it began to rain. In time, it was raining fairly steadily.
I walked on. The full, long route. By the time I got home, I was drenched.
My wife had decided not to walk with me for a couple of reasons. She was on the stationary bike as I returned to our apartment.
“You know what?” I said. “It’s raining out there.”
She looked at me like all sanity had fled.
Maybe it had. But I figured rain isn’t going to melt me. Also — it’s summer, and the rain was kind of pleasant.
But if taking a walk in the rain is a sign of insanity — then sanity, I think, is overrated.
The sane path is not for everyone
