Let’s be clear about one thing in particular. We are not killing the Earth, per se. It is our actions that are changing the weather and making her less hospitable for us, but we won’t kill her.
No, she’ll kill us, folks.
It is the height of arrogance to believe we can kill this planet. Science knows there have been multiple events on this planet that have caused mass extinctions — but Earth remains. She will endure our abuse, but not without making it impossible for us to remain here.
This is why we cannot ignore pollution, climate change, and other abuses of this planet. We may have tons of resources and clever minds, but to sustain ourselves we need the planet to be healthy. Our lives, and those of our children and our children’s children and onwards depend on what we do now.
IT DOES NOT MATTER if you believe in climate change or not. What matters is that we recognize that poisoning the planet for industry and our temporary, immediate convenience is shortsighted and veritably suicidal.
Do you like to breathe? Are you a fan of clean water? Are clear skies and verdant lands inviting? Since the answer, I presume, is yes, then it should matter to you that we protect our planet from ourselves.
It’s imperative that we let the leaders in government and industry know that they can’t just poison the planet for profit.
Earth Day Everyday
I love this planet. It is full of wonders and possibilities both tangible and intangible. However, if we do not take action now, we will make this planet an inhospitable, unpleasant place for everyone.
Yes, we have the technology to create artificial environments and clean the air and water. But those come with costs, greater than we are realizing. Do you really want the ultra-rich to get richer and greedier because they gain control of the air and water we breathe?
Think that’s not possible? Sorry, it totally is. The same governmental leaders who work on convincing you that trickle-down economics works will probably try to claim that the rich will be generous and give to help us all.
This is a lie. They will use their power to gain even more wealth, and charge us for the air and water we need to survive. This is not some far-flung sci-fi plot, people, this has way more potential to become real than any of us would want.
I am not spouting a conspiracy theory, I am basing this entire argument on empirical evidence. The same people who were supposed to use their tax cuts to create jobs with living wages? Given how little they have done with that notion, it’s not hard to conclude they’ll do whatever they can to only make profit for themselves.
We are not disempowered in fixing this, not yet. But we cannot wait any longer. We need planet Earth far more than she needs us, people.
Kindness is not just for other people
First, let me state this: I am in no way advocating for going off the grid and living in the woods without creating any waste. That’s not a life. What I AM advocating is making conscientious, mindful choices.
Don’t buy the car with the worst fuel economy on the road. Choose appliances that are energy efficient. Recycle. Throw your garbage into waste receptacles, not just out windows and wherever. Turn off lights when you are not in the room. Don’t waste water.
These are individual steps each of us can take to help keep the planet healthy. Yes, this will help us, but it will also help to keep the planet in better shape. This is so very much more important than we give it credit for.
The next thing we can do is vote for people who care more about protecting the planet than the profiteers. So many members of the government are bought and paid for by big business, and wasteful, money-making industries. We need to remind them that THEY WORK FOR US. Call them. E mail them. Remind them to consider protecting the environment.
Everything changes. Because of that, the big industry of today will be a mere memory tomorrow. We have alternatives to environmentally dirty resources for power, and they can be improved upon. Also, for the record, windmills DO NOT cause cancer of any sort.
We need to work together to maintain and clean-up this planet, so that she doesn’t kick us off. Because she will. When the ant-people dig up our fossils in several million years, will it be any comfort to anyone that we had all the resources but none of the will to still be a species living on planet Earth?
Think globally, act locally
This may be a trite phrase, but it’s still valid. We can individually do things to change this situation. You and I are empowered to take actions to protect and repair this planet.
When all is said and done, what matters is life. Protecting life is an ongoing process. We need to care for the planet, and remember that we do not own her, we are her tenants. She is a very generous landlord, but if we take her for granted she’ll evict us, and keep the security deposit.
This is not something we can put off until tomorrow. This is a now issue. We need to be aware of and mindful of how we are treating the planet right now. If we continue to poison and strip her of resources and built-in safeties, she will not let us live here anymore. This is not a metaphor, it is not something impossible, it is the reality of the situation, and we need to keep that in mind now.
Again, I am not suggesting anything drastic, I am simply calling for more mindfulness and individual action to protect our home. We can do more than we think, and if we each take action, together we can fix this problem before it becomes any more difficult to do.
Let’s show the Earth all the love she deserves, and thank her for being our home.
