Think Before You Speak (or Type)

Staying one step ahead of putting out anything unkind or regrettable.

It is all too easy to act on instinct. After someone upsets you or says something incredibly stupid, whether in person, on the phone, or online, your immediate reaction is bound to be loaded with emotion.

That is why you need to pause and think before you speak. Or type.

Way too many people react viscerally to things. The instantaneous nature of the internet means that you see things as they happen. Because we live in a fear-based society focused on lack and scarcity, a lot of what we encounter is upsetting, infuriating, depressing, and otherwise negative.

You get to decide if you want to contribute to the negativity or combat it in some other way.

Remember that like attracts like. Whether you believe in the Law of Attraction or not, when you are looking at an endless stream of negative information, also being negative just increases it.

People will tell you online not to read the comments. Why? Because one negative response tends to spawn numerous others, and before you know it you are infuriated at a person or thing which, in all probability, you have little or no control over.

When all is said and done, what you do have influence and control over is limited to you.

Mindfulness is your influence and control

The only person inside your head is you. Therefore, you are the only one capable of influencing, altering, changing, and ultimately controlling what you are thinking and what and how you are feeling. Then, from your thoughts and feelings, you can choose to be intentional with any actions that you take.

When you take the time to think before speaking or typing that thought and feeling, you can decide to be specific about what it will be.

Is your comment going to fan the fire or douse the flames? Will what you say help or hurt the given situation? Is this good and useful or bad and useless?

When you think before you speak or type, you can determine the answer to all of these questions and more.

Why does it matter?

How do you feel when you go online and come across something truly awful? Let’s face it — it’s way, way too easy to do that nowadays. Between corporate greed, political bullshit, global warming, science deniers, resurgent racists and so on and so forth, it’s easy to conjure up negative feelings about life overall.

The more of this we see, the harder it is to believe that we’re not all crowding into a handbasket taking a long road to hell.

But that’s the thing about living in a fear-based society that gets focused on lack and scarcity. When you believe that there is not enough of a resource, be it tangible or intangible, or there is more bad than good out there, the actions you take will be different.

Bad news sells more newspapers — or in modern terms, gets more clicks. People panic shop or buy things out of depression they might not otherwise. Certain parties believe they can better control you and me if they perpetuate lack and scarcity and monger fear and hate.

This is all bullshit. The truth is that you live in an abundant universe, and all lack and scarcity are artificial or superficial. Responding to negativity with negativity is NOT a good way to combat it.

Hence why it’s so important that you think before you speak or type, so that you are clear about what it is you are adding to the collective consciousness, and what impact your words might have.

Be a force for good

I write about mindfulness, positivity, and conscious reality creation because these ideas contribute good things to the world.

Mindfulness empowers you in the best way you can be empowered, by becoming aware of what you think and feel and how you act from that.

Positivity is the opposite of negativity. Seeking, finding, and creating positive in a world constantly bombarded by negative does everyone good. This is not about denying the existence of the negative — positive needs negative to even be — it is about changing the focus, however. Focus on good things can help to draw more good things. That can do more good for the world at large.

Conscious reality creation is the recognition of your ability to make your life as you would desire for it to be. It is the empowerment of your self to take ahold of life rather than letting life hold you. This puts you in the driver’s seat rather than leaves you a passenger in a driverless car. Consciousness creating reality is the realization that you have the power to choose and decide how your life can be.

Whether you buy into this or see it as hooky-spooky crap, it is all still things that put more good into the world. If I can be a force for good, then I feel good about who I am and the life I am living. Even if I only put a positive notion in your head, or cause you to pause before acting for your own good, then I have been a force for good.

That’s what matters to me. This is why I practice thinking before speaking or typing.

Diplomacy and tact matter

When you think before you speak or type, you can choose your words with care. This will determine if what you are saying is helpful and kind or hurtful and harsh.

Even if you are dealing with an asshat, being tactful and diplomatic can go a long way. You can be a force for good in how you speak to and handle that person, or you can do the opposite.

It might feel good to react and lash out, but it is more empowering for you to be diplomatic and tactful. This is because words matter. What you say and how you say it can have a rather large impact. You can effect change with the right approach.

Even if you cannot sway the person you are speaking or typing to, you may have another influence. You cannot fight fire with fire, which is why thinking before making words happen can create or destroy, depending entirely on what you choose.

You cannot control how other people act, what other people say or do, or what and how they think and feel. However, you CAN choose for yourself. When you think before you speak or type, you open yourself up to fanning or dousing a flame, and creating change or adding to stagnation.

Use your words wisely. Think before you speak or type. Be the best you that you can be, and don’t give in to hate, fear, and negativity.

You are worthy and deserving of using your mindfulness to find and/or create the reality in which you desire to live. When all is said and done, you matter, and you can think before you speak to empower.
