Why Do We Tend To Be Least Gentle With Ourselves?

Do you also take the least care with how you treat yourself?

My inner monologue, when I don’t check it, can get brutal.

I will think/say things to myself that are unkind, hurtful, spiteful, and intentionally mean. Things that — if someone else said them to me — might lead to an argument, a fight (possibly involving fists and/or swords), or walking away and cutting that other person from my life.

As if my inner monologue isn’t bad enough, the other ways I mistreat myself are sometimes shady as fuck.

There have been times I will stay up later than I should, denying my body and mind much-needed rest and restoration. There are plenty of times that I’ve allowed my health, wellness, and wellbeing to fall to the wayside due to inconvenience, timing, and the needs of family and friends. And I’ve treated my body to some pretty harsh situations and veritable abuse.

I’ve allowed myself to endure physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual abuse — of my own making — I would not take from anyone else (and certainly never give to others). It’s rather crazy, on close examination, how I’ve treated myself on every level.

Not kind, uncompassionate, and certainly not gentle.
